NFPA 99 (2024)
The Health Care Facilities Code. It used to require conductive flooring in operating rooms. That requirement came out in 2015.
What it means for your floor
What changed and when
NFPA 99 historically required conductive flooring in the 2.5 x 10^4 to 1.0 x 10^6 ohm range in operating rooms using flammable anesthetics. That requirement was removed in the 2015 edition and is still absent from the current 2024 edition.
Why it was removed
Flammable inhaled anesthetics are essentially gone from US surgical practice, so the ignition risk the requirement existed to control went with them.
What this means if somebody cites it to you
NFPA 99 still governs health care facility construction broadly. It simply no longer carries this resistance range. If a specification cites NFPA 99 as the reason for a conductive floor, it is worth going back to the source before you buy to that band.
